Welcome to SelectedPlants
Because botany means more than Plants
My name is Patrick, I'm an ambitious and highly enthusiastic German scientist in the field of cyanobacteria, green algae, lichens and biocrusts. I'd like to share my thoughts here and connect to lay persons as well as to professionals of my field. Read through my personal science blog, find me on Instagram or check out my research articles.

My Story and Thoughts
I'm the research group leader of XCEL - the Extreme Cryptogam Ecology Lab at the University of Applied Sciences Kaiserslautern (Germany), currently holding an interims professorship. My research focuses on cyanobacteria, green algae and lichens from the most extreme environments on our planet - both poles, the Atacama Desert and caves. My research is driven by the question on how these microorganisms can influence ecosystems from their micro niche to the landscape scale. Focal point of interests are biodiversity, lichen symbioses, microbial co-occurance as well as taxonomy and systematics. We have developed several methods to elucidate their hidden diversity and beauty, including molecular approaches, microscopic techniques as well as ecophysiological measurements and bio-weathering experiments.
Try to find out more about me and my scientific work by clicking through my research articles about cyanobacteria, green algae and lichens from the most exciting areas on our planet. I also provide a blog with regular updates on various aspects of my research.
I am waiting for your emails and comments!
